Director Joris Postema is awarded the Dutch Movies Matter Award of MtMF20 for this documentary Stop Filming Us. To stimulate the production of socially engaged Dutch films, we presented the third edition of the successful competition Dutch Movies Matter, made possible with the help of VEVAM. Eight Dutch documentaries competed for the Dutch Movies Matter Award. From the jury report: ''The winning film mesmerized the jury both visually and through its unique story. Beautiful images and captivating dialogues have made for a fresh approach to a tricky topic. It is a multi-layered film with fantastic characters whom we get to know intimately in the most genuine way. As audience we are part of the filmmaking process itself. We follow the thought processes of the filmmaker, who is consistently trying not only to self-reflect and to engage in an honest dialogue with the protagonists, but also to make sure that they have agency in telling their stories. Due to its important contribution to the crucial discussion about Western filmmaking and neo-colonialism on the African continent, the winner of the Dutch Movies Matter Award 2020 is Stop Filming Us by Joris Postema.'' Jury members: Ido Abram (Chair), Sigal Yehuda, Meral Uslu, Marinke van Riet, and Ulyana Toporovskaya. ABOUT THE FILM Fascinating study into different perceptions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Can a Western filmmaker really capture something truthful about this complex, damaged and beautiful country? Or do Western ‘good intentions’ only cause harm and frustration? Honest and insightful, with voices from all sides. _________________ MOVIES THAT MATTER FESTIVAL 2020 ONLINE Unfortunately, we had to cancel the Movies that Matter Festival 2020 due to the measures surrounding the corona virus.
